The Global Road Safety Facility (GRSF) is a global multi-donor fund hosted by the World Bank. Its mission is to help governments develop road safety management capacity and scale up road safety delivery in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The GRSF provides funding, knowledge, and technical assistance designed to scale up the efforts of the LMICs to build their scientific, technological, managerial, and delivery capacities for road safety.

Knowledge. In February 2022, the Helping Save Lives from Road Crashes in Asia-Pacific webinar series was held, providing comprehensive training on safer road infrastructure toward the elimination of high-risk roads, and in pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goal of halving road deaths and injuries by 2030. The GRSF is one of the partners that co-organized this capacity-building initiative with ADB.

In October 2022, the Global Regional Road Safety Observatory: Dialogue on Powered Two-Wheeler Safety was held. It is an interactive expert program on motorcycle safety for LMICs focusing on countries where motorcycling is the dominant road transport mode. The GRSF and ADB are some of the partners in this event led by the Asia-Pacific Road Safety Observatory.

In addition, the Crash Investigation and Reporting Assessment was initiated in 2022, supported by the Global Road Safety Partnership, the GRSF, and ADB. The assessment studies crash data management practices in Mongolia, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Tajikistan to improve the accuracy and reporting rates of Fatal and Serious Injury crash data.

New Road Safety Observatory for Asia and Pacific Region: Fighting Road Fatalities and Injuries with Better Data

The Asia-Pacific Road Safety Observatory (APRSO) boosts the capacity of countries in the region to collect, analyze, and share reliable road crash data, with the objective of drastically reducing the number of road deaths and crash injuries in the region. The APRSO receives financial support from the UK Aid through the Global Road Safety Facility. Technical support also comes from the World Health Organization and UNESCAP.

Reimagining Transport in a Post-Pandemic World

As Asia and the Pacific emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic, policymakers have an opportunity to adopt a “build forward better” approach to transport development. The Asian Development Bank hosted the Asia and the Pacific Transport Forum in April 2022 to explore solutions for creating a more sustainable and decarbonized transport future for the region. The ADB publication “Reimagining the Future of Transport Across Asia and the Pacific” identifies emerging trends set to shape transport development in the coming decades and offers ideas for policymakers to consider when planning future transport strategies.
